‘Tis the Season to be Merry

The sharp bite of winter has arrived and it is a time of office parties, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.  I like the word “merry”: for me it captures the rosy-cheeked fun of this time of year in England.  

Of course it’s not all rosy.  As usual we’ll be bombarded by all the crass commercial stuff with “30% off” and “3 for 2” offers of dubious financial integrity.  Even more tediously we’ll be told by our Big Nanny not to do something or other because it’s bad for us or because it’s dangerous.  If you can ignore these dull, ugly and fearful messages then it really is a great time to celebrate the positive side of life with friends and family.

When it comes to wine my advice is simply: drink better.  Life is too short.  Better wine may cost a few pounds more, but give me quality above quantity every time.  That applies equally to office parties and New Year’s Eve, where you’ll really appreciate the advice the next day, and to Christmas, when a few well chosen bottles can really compliment all the hard work in the kitchen.
